ATLANTA - Scoring more than 100 points for the first time since 2017, Georgia State's women's basketball team smashed multiple records on offense and defense to win 114-31 over Agnes Scott in their first regular season game at the GSU Convocation Center.
The Panthers set new records for points scored in a game (114), field goals made (50) and largest margin of victory (83) while forcing a program-record 32 steals on defense. Their 114 points broke the previous record of 111 set against USC Spartanburg in 1985 and Mercer in 1987. It also marked the first time that GSU scored 100 or more in a game since a 101-56 victory over Allen University on December 3, 2017.
The 83 point margin of victory shattered the record of 65 set against USC Spartanburg in 1985, and their 50 field goals toppled the record of 48 also set against USC Spartanburg that year.
The Panthers shot 62.5 percent from the field, tied for second-best mark in school history, along with 25 assists and totaled 92 points in the paint, a whopping 64 points off turnovers and 41 on the fast break. GSU's defense held Agnes Scott to just 10-of-46 from the field and under 10 points in three of the four quarters while outrebounding the Scotties 50-22 while forcing 42 turnovers.
Eight different Panthers scored 10 or more points, led by freshman Zay Dyer in her collegiate debut and junior
Deasia Merrill, who both scored 17 points.Â
Tehya Lyons just missed a double-double with 16 points and eight assists with six steals. On defense, Nyla Jean tallied eight steals, one short of the program record, and Mikyla Tolivert grabbed nine rebounds.
GSU took a commanding lead early in the first, jumping out to a 29-7 lead in the first quarter, highlighted by a 7:31 stretch which saw them go on a 23-0 run and force 12. The Panthers led 49-18 at halftime when they put the game away for good, outscoring Agnes Scott 40-5 in the third to push their lead to 66.
GSU will start a three game road trip just two miles north at Georgia Tech on Thursday, November 10. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
