Panthers Upset No. 1 Seed Georgia Southern, Advance to Sun Belt Conference Semifinals

Foley, Ala.— Rematching in-state conference rival Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals, No. 8 seed Georgia State women's soccer knocked off the top-seeded Eagles, 1-0, on Wednesday night with Callee Maughon's goal in the 18th minute that gave the Panthers an early advantage in the match. GSU advances to its fifth consecutive SBC Championship semifinals with the win and will face the winner of James Madison versus Texas State on Friday, Nov. 4.

GSU entered the quarterfinal match in Foley, Ala. having faced Georgia Southern less than a week prior to Wednesday night's meeting between the two teams. In an offensive-heavy outing with GSU charting 14 total shots on the night, Thursday, Oct. 27 saw the Panthers fall to the Eagles, 1-0, despite out-shooting the conference foe 10-to-one in the second half.

Georgia Southern's lone goal of the Thursday night match in Atlanta came off the Eagles' only shot of the second half. Wednesday night promised the Panthers another opportunity at defeating the first-seeded Eagles, this time with conference tournament implications at stake.

The Panthers wasted no time as Maughon connected on the scoring opportunity off an assist from teammate Gracen Crosby  just 18 minutes into the match. GSU maintained the 1-0 lead as well as strong collective play on defense throughout the entirety of the first half.

The Panthers tallied seven total shots on Wednesday night while Georgia Southern tallied 13 total shots. The Eagles were ultimately unable to find the equalizer as GSU held on to the lead and upset the No. 1 overall seeded opponent, 1-0.

All-Sun Belt Second-Team honoree  Eva Diez Lois continued her strong play on the Panthers' backline helping lead the defense to its ninth clean sheet on the season. Goalkeeper Jaddah Foos  was once again stout in the net collecting five saves on the night.

Now 9-6-5 on the season, GSU will face the winner of James Madison versus Texas State on Friday at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast live from the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala. on ESPN+.
