Panthers' Tournament Run Ends With Hard-Fought Overtime Loss to JMU

Foley, Ala.— Competing in the Sun Belt Conference Championship semifinals for the fifth consecutive season, Georgia State women's soccer battled James Madison in a hard-fought outing that saw the Panthers come up short, 1-0, in overtime on Friday. Goalkeeper Jaddah Foosperformance highlighted the evening for the Panthers as the junior tallied a total of nine saves through 110 minutes of play for GSU.

GSU entered the match with aggression charting back-to-back shots in the third minute. Gabby West and Brooklynn Fugel each tallied a shot in the opening attack by the Panthers.

Bree Barley and Jimena Cabrero both accounted for shots in the 33rd and 34th minutes bringing the Panthers' total to four in the second half. JMU matched GSU on offense also charting four shots, but neither team was able to connect as the teams entered the half even at 0-0.

Entering the second half of competition, the Panthers once again went on the attack as Cabrero recorded a second shot in the opening minute of the period. Barley tallied a second shot in the 81st minute of play to bring GSU's total shot count to six at fulltime.

Still knotted at 0-0 at the end of regulation, the teams entered extra time to decide the outcome of the semifinal match in Foley. True to form, GSU entered the extra period of play attacking as team captain Eva Diez Lois tallied a shot for the Panthers in the 92nd minute.

Foos remained resolute in the box notching three additional saves in overtime. Foos' nine saves on Friday marked a season high for the goalkeeper.

Despite the strong play by Foos and the Panthers' defense facing JMU, the Dukes managed a 104' goal in the final five minutes of play following a deflected save by Foos. GSU was unable to equalize in the final minutes of competition and the match ended, 1-0, in JMU's favor.

With the hard-fought loss on Friday, the Panthers close the 2022 season after reeling off consecutive wins in SBC Tournament play to reach the fifth-straight conference semifinal. No. 8-seeded GSU knocked off No. 9 seed Southern Miss on Monday, followed by top-seeded in-state rival Georgia Southern on Wednesday.

Foos ends the 2022 campaign charting a team high for minutes played with 1775 on the season. The goalkeeper finished the year starting in all 20 match appearances while competing for 90 or more minutes in all but one outing for the Panthers.

Junior midfielder Elena Diaz closed 2022 as the team's leading scorer with five goals on the year. Joining the Panthers' roster as a transfer for the fall, Diaz charted a total of 25 shots with 15 shots on goal, two assists and a .200% shooting percentage.

Defender Diaz Lois received All-Sun Belt Second-Team honors for 2022 as announced by the conference on Monday. Boasting a high-powered and well-balanced attack on offense for the majority of the season, 13 Panthers end the year charting double-digit shot totals for 2022.

Led by head coach Ed Joyce, GSU wraps the season with a 9-7-5 overall record for 2022. Joyce reached 50 career wins following the team's 1-0 victory facing Appalachian State on Oct. 6.

The additions of assistant coaches TK Abderahman, Panthers' soccer alum Brisa Zavala and goalkeepers coach Bryce Billington proved critical to the team's success in 2022. GSU will look to 2023 in hopes of continuing to progress.
