Panthers Fall in Opening Round of Sun Belt Conference Tournament

FOLEY – The seventh seeded Panthers fell in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament to the sixth seeded Arkansas State Red Wolves, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-22).
 
The Red Wolves opened the match with a Laura Ehieze kill followed by a block from Isabelle Percoco and Clara Bednarek. The Panthers went up early 7-3 before the Red Wolves went on.a 5-0 run to take the lead in the match. The teams kept it close trading the lead until the match was tied at 19-all. With multiple errors from the Panthers, the Red Wolves were able to close and won the opening set, 25-23.
 



Like the first set, the Panthers earned the opening point with a kill from Erin Wyatt. The Red Wolves took the lead at 7-6 and would not relinquish it despite multiple efforts from the Panthers to claw their way back into the match. The Red Wolves won the second set, 25-21.
 



After earning the first point of the third set, the Panthers went down 7-5. A kill from Percoco and back-to-back aces from Jenna Brown gave the Panthers the lead. The teams fought back and forth before at 4-0 run from the Red Wolves gave them the 17-12 lead. After going down 20-16, tough serving by Livy Kowalkowski led the Panthers on a 6-0 run to take the lead 22-20. The Red Wolves bounced back and closed the third set at 25-22 to win match with a 5-0 run.
 

 
Kowalkowski recorded 13 digs to move up to No. 9 all-time in Georgia State history for season single digs with 472. Ryan Spicer-Gordon and Erin Wyatt also helped anchor the backrow with nine and eight digs respectively. While the story of the night was service errors for the Panthers, the team did dish out four aces – including three from Jenna Brown. The setter also dished out 17 assists. Bednarek led the Panthers' attack with eight kills. The junior middle blocker also recorded six blocks. Wyatt and Percoco put down seven kills each.
 
Georgia State ends the 2022 season with an overall record of 7-22 and a conference record of 3-13.
