Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Panthers Rally Late vs. Georgia Tech Before Falling on Last Second Shot

ATLANTA--Georgia State tied the game on a three-point play by Brenden Tucker with 26 seconds left, but Georgia Tech came away with the 59-57 win on a basket by Miles Kelly with four seconds left Saturday night at the GSU Convocation Center.

After splitting a pair of overtime games the last two years, the two Atlanta schools went down to the wire again as Georgia State (1-1) rallied from eight points down in the final three minutes. Ja'Heim Hudson led the Panthers with a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Jamaine Mann added 13 points before a crowd of 4,083 in the Panthers' new arena.

"That was a great atmosphere, and I want to give credit to our fans, who brought a lot of energy, a lot of intensity and a lot of enthusiasm," GSU head coach Jonas Hayes said. "I thought our guys fought hard. I saw a lot of good things on the basketball court, and of course, I saw some things that we need to work on. We do not believe in moral victories. That is not what we're about, and we're going to keep marching, keep putting one foot in front of the other, and we're going to get better."

Georgia State built a 42-35 lead with 12 minutes to play behind Hudson, who scored 10 of 12 points for the Panthers in a five-minute stretch.

Then it was Georgia Tech's turn to go on a run as the Yellow Jackets (2-0) scored the next five points to pull within 42-40. Tech took its first lead of the second half on a pair of free throws by Tristan Maxwell that put the Jackets up 49-47 with 6:15 to play.

Tech stretched the lead to 55-47 on free throw by Jalon Moore with 2:50 left, but Hudson responded quickly with a layup, and then grabbed a defensive rebound that led to Mann's short jumper to make it 55-51.

Mann came up with a steal that he took the other way for a dunk to pull GSU within two, 55-53 with 1:36 left. After another defensive rebound by Hudson, Mann scored his fifth straight point as he made one of two free throws with 59 seconds left.

After Moore hit two free throws to extend Tech's lead to 57-54 with 36 seconds on the clock, Tucker made a layup and was fouled, completing the three-point play to tie the game with 26 seconds left.

Tech ran down the clock for Kelly, who drove the baseline for a short floater for the game-winner.

Hudson had a career night for the second straight game after opening the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds vs. Coastal Georgia. The sophomore from Wheeler High School 16-for-22 from the field in the two games. Ten of his 21 rebounds were offensive, and he also contributed four blocks and three steals.

Dwon Odom had 10 points, six rebounds five assists and five assists for the Panthers.

Neither team shot well from the field as Georgia State hit only 31 percent but the Panthers held Georgia Tech to under 35 percent and outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 36-33. GSU outscored Tech in the paint by a 38-22 margin.

Trailing 8-4 early, the Panthers used a 13-0 spurt to take the lead with 11 minutes left in the half. Tech tied the game at 18-all before the Panthers took a 26-25 lead into the locker room.
