Panthers Close Regular Season, Enter Sun Belt Championship as No. 8 Seed

ATLANTA— Closing the regular season of competition with a final home match in Atlanta, Georgia State women's soccer fell to in-state conference rival Georgia Southern, 1-0, on Thursday. The Panthers will enter the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Championship as the No. 8 overall seed in the tournament set to face No. 9 seed Southern Miss on Monday, Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. ET.

GSU opened the match facing the Eagles with a fast start on offense charting three shots in the first eight minutes of competition. The Panthers continued the attack on offense for the remainder of the match totaling 14 shots on the night.

Lauren O'Hearn and Jimena Cabrero each tallied a team-high three shots on Thursday night, while Bree Barley and Alondra Nieves both charted two shots for GSU. 

The Panthers' defense limited Georgia Southern to four shots for the entirety of the match and just one shot in the second half. With the match scoreless through 86 minutes, Georgia Southern connected on a goal to take the 1-0 lead late with four minutes to play.

GSU managed a final shot in the 87th minute but was unable to find the equalizer as the team fell by a count of 1-0. With the loss, the Panthers finish the regular season 7-6-5 overall and 3-5-2 in SBC play.

The 2022 SBC Championship will be contested Oct. 31-Nov. 6 at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala. Tournament matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with live stats available to fans.
