Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's Tennis Falls to Georgia Tech 4-3 in Competitive Season Opener

ATLANTA- Despite a strong performance in what proved to be a competitive matchup, the Georgia State men's tennis team fell to Georgia Tech 4-3 on Friday night in Ken Byers Tennis Complex to open the spring 2022 season.

Among those in attendance was Dr. M. Brian Blake, president of Georgia State University. Dr. Blake, a Georgia Tech alumnus, spoke with the team prior to the match.

The Panthers opened play in the electric atmosphere with a competitive doubles performance but ultimately conceded the first point after losses on courts one and two. Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds were narrowly defeated 7-5 on court one in an impressive showing against No. 3 ranked Andres Martin and Marcus McDaniel of Georgia Tech.

Despite falling behind early, the team maintained its confidence and energy entering singles competition. With nothing coming easy for either team, Georgia Tech managed to claim two additional points with wins on courts one and two.

Diego Padilha secured a point with a win by retirement, but not before Georgia Tech would earn a fourth and final point to close out the hard-fought match with a victory on court four.

Following the match point it was decided that both teams would play out the remainder of the match. Patrick Lazo defeated his opponent 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 on court five to give GSU a second point. The team then earned an additional third point following Duarte's thrilling win 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 11-9 on court three to wrap up the day.

Head coach Jonathan Wolff was proud of his team's performance and feels that the match offered plenty of positive takeaways moving forward.

"It's obviously disappointing," Wolff said. "It's never a great feeling when you don't get the win. With that said, I'm proud of how the guys played and I'm proud of our effort as a team. The atmosphere was absolutely electric and it felt good to get the season going. I'm also glad we were able to grab a few points there in the end. The team showed a lot of fight and determination and it was clear that they wanted to play."

With the season now underway, GSU looks to maintain the level of success that the team has had in recent years.

"There were plenty of positives with our performance in the match today," Wolff said. "We had the opportunity to play against a great opponent, and this is only the beginning of a long season that we have ahead of us. I believe that we'll get things rolling and hopefully begin to pick up a lot of wins— starting with our first home match this Sunday. We're already looking forward it."

GSU looks to regroup before facing Wofford on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. ET at the GSU Clarkston Courts in the team's first home match of the season. Live stats will be available.
