Men's Tennis Opens Home Play with Dominant 5-2 Win Over Wofford

ATLANTA- Coming off a hard-fought battle that saw the team come up short against Georgia Tech 4-3 on Friday, Georgia State men's tennis opened play at home with a dominant win over Wofford 5-2 on Sunday.

Despite Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte posting a resounding 6-3 win on court one, Wofford managed to secure close wins on courts two and three as GSU dropped in doubles 2-1 and fell behind 1-0 early. The Panthers never looked back entering singles competition— reeling off four-straight wins to secure the match victory.

Grinvalds once again made quick work of his opponent in the first position as GSU secured a point with the 6-1, 6-3 victory on court one and evened up the match at 1-1. Similarly, Patrick Lazo earned the Panthers a second point on court four by winning handily 6-2, 6-4 in the fourth position.

Duarte put on another exciting singles performance in the second position as he won in three sets 6-4, (4-6), 6-1 and claimed a third point for GSU. The fifth year senior has displayed thrilling three-set victories in each of his last two singles competitions so far this season.

GSU's fourth point came after Kevin Huynh clinched the match on court three 6-4, (5-7), 6-3. Sunday marked Huynh's first home match back with the team since graduating in spring 2021.

"Wofford is a sneaky-good team and I'm proud of the way the boys fought," Huynh said. "We stumbled a bit in doubles, but everyone had to step up— especially with one of our players being injured."

GSU was forced to enter the season short-handed without senior Vazha Shubladze. Shubladze, the 2021 Sun Belt Player of the Year, has missed the past two matches for the Panthers with an injury.

"We believed that we could win today and we ended up getting that done," Huynh said. "It was obviously great to clinch the win in my first home match back with the team. The team played very well today and I just couldn't be more proud."

With the teams deciding to play out the remainder of the competition, GSU narrowly dropped court five while freshman Edward Tymes closed out the match with yet another fifth and final point on court six. The Panthers 5-2 win moves the team to 1-1 on the season.

GSU will resume action at home next weekend as they face USF on Friday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. ET. The match will be played indoors at Life Time Athletic and Tennis in Peachtree Corners, Ga. Live stats will be available.
