Kiser Scores Game-Winner in OT to Down Owls

ATLANTA -- Grace Kiser headed in the game-winning goal in overtime Friday night as Georgia State defeated Kennesaw State 2-1.

Kiser's header came off a Gracen Crosby corner kick in the 98th minute. Kiser fought through a pair of KSU defenders to net her second goal of the season.

"I think we are trending in a really good direction," head coach Ed Joyce said after the team's second win in a row. "Hopefully we can use this to drive us into a good performance on Sunday."

Georgia State received strong efforts from its defense on Friday. KSU started the game aggressive and controlled possession in the opening minutes, but goalkeeper Maria Subies and her back line kept the game scoreless as GSU flipped the momentum in the latter parts of the first half.

GSU held an 11-5 shot advantage at halftime.

"At halftime we talked about sticking to the gameplan and staying consistent with our effort," Joyce said. "We felt we were playing well and that an opportunity would come our way."

That opportunity presented itself just minutes into the second half as Jolie Ryff fired a shot at the KSU goal. KSU's keeper saved the shot but the ball fell right to freshman Brooklynn Fugel who scored her first collegiate goal to give GSU a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.

"Her work rate is off the charts and it is really pleasing to see the game pay her back," Joyce noted about Fugel.

Subies made three saves in the second half but the Owls finally broke through to even the score at 1-1 in the 82nd minute and forced overtime.

Kiser, who finished the contest with two shots, sent the Panther fans home happy with her game-winner in the 98th. Friday's win marked GSU's first win over KSU since 2015.

Georgia State improves to 3-2 on the season and will host Mississippi Valley State Sunday at 1 p.m.
