Panthers Beat MVSU to Push Win Streak to Three

ATLANTA -- Georgia State defeated Mississippi Valley State 4-0 Sunday afternoon to extend its win streak to three games.

The Panthers dominated possession but struggled to find the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore Maddie Johnston, who led the team in goals in 2020, scored her first of the season in the 26th minute to open the scoring. 

Georgia State continued its dominance in the second half and quickly doubled its lead with a Brooklynn Fugel goal in the 48th. Fugel has scored in each of GSU's last two contests.

A pair of Panthers scored their first collegiate goals in the second half as freshman Gabby West scored in the 68th off an assist from fellow freshman Olivia Shaw and freshman Bree Barley drilled a goal into the upper left in the 73rd on an assist from freshman Alondra Nieves.

Jaddah Foos earned the win in goal for GSU. Freshman keeper Natalie Gonzalez made her Panther debut and made two saves in the final 45 minutes. 

The Panthers will carry their three-game win streak into their next match Friday night at Furman.

"We're getting there. Our confidence is really high right now and we want to continue this into conference play," senior Brisa Zavala said.

Zavala played 64 minutes with a pair of shots.
