JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia State volleyball team fell to Virginia Tech, 2-3 (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 17-25, 13-15) Friday afternoon during the North Florida Invitational at UNF arena in Jacksonville, Fla.
Georgia State got off to a hot start winning sets one and two before dropping the following three sets. For the match, the Panthers were led by Erin Wyatt who notched a double-double with an impressive 12 kills and 19 digs. Leah Wilcox also logged a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Defensively, the Panthers were led by Ava Vlkovic who registered 26 digs. Freshman Claire Lewis had a standout performance as the Peachtree City, Ga., native logged 31 assists and 16 digs.
GSU came out aggressive in set one and dominated from the first serve. The Panthers jumped out to a 19-10 lead and went on to win the set, 25-16. Clara Bednarek had a dominant performance in set one as she accumulated five kills and three digs while hitting .500. Wilcox had an impressive performance in set one as well as she notched four kills and three digs.
The Panthers continued their excellent play in set two as they tallied 13 kills en route to a 25-21 set victory. Wyatt made her presence felt in set two as she logged four kills and six digs. Laura Ehieze went on to notch three kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
With its back against the wall, Virginia Tech fought back to win a competitive third set, 25-23, before winning the fourth set, 25-17. In set three, the Hokies were led by Cera Powell who tallied five kills and three digs. Meisheia Griffin led the Panthers in set three with four kills and three blocks while hitting .571.
After playing to a 2-2 ledger through four sets, the teams clashed for a fifth and final set. Georgia State jumped out to an 8-5 advantage in set five before a 6-2 run from Virginia Tech gave the Hokies an 11-10 lead. Virginia Tech never looked back and went on to win the set 15-13.
