Panthers Fall at Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Georgia State volleyball team put together a resilient effort but eventually fell to Louisiana 1-3 (21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 27-29) Friday night at Earl K. Long gymnasium in Lafayette, La.

Georgia State drops to 3-9 (0-2 Sun Belt), while Louisiana improves to (6-3, 1-0 Sun Belt).

For the match, the Panthers were led by Leah Wilcox who tallied a season-high 15 kills and Meisheia Griffin who notched 13 kills while hitting .444. Wilcox played well defensively also as she logged 13 digs for her second double-double of the season.

Ava Vlkovic continued her stellar play as the sophomore libero registered 20 digs. Claire Lewis and Truth Hafey also played well as the two setters combined for 43 assists.

During the first two sets, Louisiana put together a dominant performance as the Ragin' Cajuns won both sets with effective hitting and stellar defense. Louisiana's momentum from sets one and two carried over to set three and Georgia State found itself down 5-12.

Down 2-0 in the match, and facing a potential sweep, the Panthers stormed back in emphatic fashion with a 13-4 run to take an 18-16 lead in set three. Louisiana put together a 4-2 run to tie the set at 20 before Georgia State scored four unanswered points to notch match point. The Ragin' Cajuns refused to go away with a 3-0 run, but a kill from Griffin notched the set victory for the Panthers.

Georgia State came out aggressive in set four and jumped out to an 8-3 lead. Louisiana then rallied with nine unanswered points to take a 12-8 lead and never looked back. After a service error from Vlkovic gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 24-19 lead and match point, the Panthers scored five consecutive points to tie the match at 24. The teams went back-and-forth until Louisiana scored consecutive points to win the set and match.

Georgia State will return to Atlanta next weekend when it hosts Appalachian State on Oct. 1 and Coastal Carolina on Oct. 2 at GSU Sports Arena.
