Big First Half Leads Men's Soccer to 4-2 Win at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – With three first half goals, including two in the final two minutes of the half, the Georgia State men's soccer team earned a 4-2 win over Winthrop on Saturday night at Eagle Field.

Georgia State (4-2) won for the fourth time in five games as four different Panthers scored. Winthrop (2-3) was outshot 19-8 and lost for the second-straight game.

Sophomore Simon Carlson got the Panthers on the board in the 25th minute, scoring his first goal of the season.

Senior Salar Faryar gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead with less than two minutes left to play in the opening half thanks to assists from Andrew Miller-Bell and Carlos Luna.

With just 16 seconds to play in the half, freshman Ethan Sassine found the back of the net to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead with assists going to Miller-Bell and Ramon Munoz.

Winthrop quickly came out in the second half and scored in the 47th minute on a strike from Jonathan Foster.

Carlos Luna put the Panthers back up by three scoring his first goal of the season in the 71st minute.

The Eagles added a late goal on a penalty kick from Bryant Jimenez-Pearce in the 76th minute, but it would be the last time Winthrop found the back of the net.

  • The Panthers now lead the all-time series with the Eagles 5-1, including a 2-1 mark in Rock Hill.
  • Head coach Brett Surrency is 4-0 all-time against the Eagles.
  • The Panthers improved to 3-1 on the road this season and have outscored their opponents in those matches 9-4.
  • Georgia State finished with a 9-3 shots on goal advantage on the night.
