Eubanks Joins Football Staff as Safeties Coach

Stepp, Peoples, Ellington Also Promoted

ATLANTA -- Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott has completed his 2021 coaching staff with the hiring of Darius Eubanks as safeties coach.

In addition, Elliott announced that Josh Stepp, the Panthers' tight ends coach since 2017, has been named recruiting coordinator; second-year cornerbacks coach Cory Peoples has been elevated to defensive passing game coordinator; and second-year assistant coach Dan Ellington will be the running backs coach.

A former NFL outside linebacker, Eubanks spent the last three seasons on the defensive staff at Samford but comes to Georgia State from Western Carolina, where he was hired this spring as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach by first-year head coach Kerwin Bell.

"We're excited to bring Darius Eubanks on board to join our defensive staff and coach our safeties," said Elliott as he enters his fifth season at the helm. "He's an outstanding coach and person who is eager to get to work with the talented young men in our secondary.

"We have a great staff in place, and we can't wait to get on the practice field to get ready for what's going to be an exciting 2021 season."

At Samford, Eubanks coached the safeties for two seasons (2018-19) and then served as the defensive backs coach and assistant special teams coordinator through the spring of 2021.

Most recently, he helped mentor All-America and first-team All-Southern Conference selection Chris Edmonds, who tied for second nationally in FCS with four interceptions in the 2021 season.

Eubanks began his coaching career as the defensive line graduate assistant at Arkansas in 2017.

An All-Southern Conference safety at Georgia Southern, Eubanks signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He spent his NFL career (2013-16) with the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A native of Thomson, Ga., where he was a three-sport letter winner and a two-time all-state selection at Thomson High School, Eubanks earned his bachelor's degree in sport management in 2013.

Georgia State opens preseason practice Aug. 6, and the Panthers' season opener is Sept. 4 against Army at Center Parc Stadium in a noon game that will be nationally-televised on ESPNU.
