Panthers Rally Again, Win on Riesselmann's Walk-off HR in 10th

Second Straight Sunday with Dramatic Late-Game Rally

ATLANTA – Georgia State put together another late rally, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to tie the game and then winning on Kyle Riesselmann's walk-off home run in the 10th, giving the Panthers a 17-15 victory over Troy and a series win Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

After taking a 9-5 lead on Josh Smith's grand slam in the fifth inning, the Panthers trailed 15-10 in the eighth, but one week after scoring nine runs in the ninth inning to defeat Appalachian State, Georgia State (10-27, 6-6 Sun Belt) fought back again, tying the game on Kalen Puckett's two-run, pinch hit double.

Freshman right-hander Chandler Dawson (1-2) finished the game with two scoreless innings to earn the victory.

"That was an unbelievably resilient win for our team," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "Just like last Sunday, I'm just so happy that we kept coming back and kept fighting. We never got down. We did a good job of battling through a couple of innings where it seemed like we couldn't get them out, and then we came up with some huge hits."

Down 15-10, Georgia State loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth on singles by Cameron Jones and Griffin Cheney and a walk by Josh Smith. Elian Merejo drove in one with a sacrifice fly, and then the Panthers executed a double steal, and Cheney scored when the catcher's throw to third sailed into left field.

Will Mize's RBI-single made it 15-13, and Dalton Pearson singled and moved up on an error to put runners at second and third. Puckett came on to pinch hit and smacked the first pitch for a double to right center to tie the game.

After a scoreless ninth, Pearson led off the 10th with a solid single, and with one out, Riesselmann blasted the first pitch over the wall in straightaway center field for the walk-off win. That is the second homer of the season for the second-year freshman center fielder from Tyrone, Ga.

In Georgia State's five-run fourth-inning, Smith hit a grand slam for the second straight Sunday after his go-ahead slam in the ninth inning against App State. He also had an RBI-single in the sixth to finish with five RBI on the day. The sophomore outfielder is the first Panther to hit two grand slams in a season since Ryan Blanton in 2017.

That put GSU up 9-5, but Troy (16-18, 4-8) answered with a two-run homer in the sixth and then a seven-run sixth inning, including two more homers, to take a 14-9 lead.

Jones and Cheney had three hits each for the Panthers, while Cheney, Merejo, Puckett and Riesselmann each drove in two runs.

Georgia State returns to action Tuesday when the Panthers host Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
