MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Georgia State men's tennis (14-6) was bested by No. 48 Middle Tennessee 4-2 in the final road contest of the season on Friday night. The loss marks the end of a ten-match winning streak by the Panthers this season.
Georgia State entered the match hungry for the upset. The drive was showcased throughout the competitive doubles play. The Raiders took the third court over Mihai Marinescu and Vazha Shubladze, 6-3. Meanwhile, No. 86 Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte bested their opposition 6-4 in the second position. The doubles point came down to a ranked battle in the top position. No. 55 Harvey Maughan and Kevin Huynh hung on despite a strong comeback from No. 74 Pavel Motl and Stijin Slump. Their efforts clinched the one-point advantage for the Panthers.
MTSU rebounded and jumped to quick leads in singles play, taking five of the six first sets. The Raiders would continue the momentum, accumulating wins on courts one, two and four to put the host school within one score of the team victory. Freshman Mihai Marinescu shined, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory on the fifth court to add to the GSU point total. After falling in the first frame, Kevin Huynh responded by forcing a third set to help keep the Panthers alive. Before the senior could finish, MTSU clinched the team victory behind a victory on the third court over Grinvalds.
Georgia State will return to Atlanta to battle UNC Wilmington in the final regular season contest. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. at Horseshoe Bend Country Club.
