ATLANTA - Georgia State men's tennis dropped a 4-2 decision against UNC Wilmington in the regular season finale at the Horseshoe Bend Country Club on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers finish the regular season with a 14-7 overall record, including a perfect note in Sun Belt action.
Georgia State started strong in doubles action recording the fourth doubles point in a row. The Panthers found quick success from No. 86 Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte on the second court. Courts one and three continued to battle in closer contests. No. 55 Kevin Huynh and Harvey Maughan fell on the top court. Moments later Patrick Lazo and Mihai Marinescu emerged victorious on the third court in their first outing as a pair to clinch the one-point edge for GSU.
The Panthers and Seahawks engaged in long, physical rallies on each court during singles play. The two squads split first sets with each time finding the edge on three courts. Kevin Huynh continued his momentum in the second frame to extend the Georgia State lead to 2-0.
Despite the best efforts of the blue and white, the Seahawks collected wins on two, three, and six where they had taken each first set. After winning the first set, Patrick Lazo fell in the second as the Seahawks fought for the team victory. Lazo could not regain footing in the third frame, as UNCW took the set to clinch the 4-2 result in favor of the visitor. On the top court Harvey Maughan held a 7-6, 5-4 advantage over his opposition, but the junior's match would go unfinished.
Next weekend Georgia State, who sits atop the Sun Belt rankings, will compete in the SBC Championships at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. More information regarding the tournament will be available soon.
