Duarte Clinches 4-3 Victory on Senior Day

ATLANTA - Georgia State men's tennis (13-5) edged out Jacksonville State in a 4-3 decision on Sunday afternoon in front of a home crowd at the Horseshoe Bend Country Club.

Prior to today's action Kevin Huynh and Steven Huynh were honored during the Senior ceremony. With crowd support the brothers both took the courts in doubles action. Kevin Huynh partnered with Harvey Maughan on the top court. The pair was named the No. 47 doubles pair in the country in the latest ITA rankings. Steven Huynh partnered with fellow Georgia native Andrei Duarte on the second court. Both brothers found 6-2 wins on their respective courts to clinch the one-point advantage for GSU. Play continued on the third court where the Panthers fell 6-4.

Georgia State fed off the Senior Day energy, as Roberts Grinvalds extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-0 decision on court three. The Gamecocks earned their first point of the day with a result over Kevin Huynh. The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, Vazha Shubladze, would put the Panthers ahead by two once again with a decision on the top court. Steven Huynh would fall on the sixth court to put Jacksonville State back within striking distance.

All eyes turned to courts two and four where Harvey Maughan and Andrei Duarte were each competing in third set battles. Duarte found the fourth point for the blue and white, outlasting his opposition in a tiebreaker. Shortly after, Maughan would fall in the third frame to add to the Jacksonville State point total.

The Panthers are now riding a nine consecutive match winning streak going into the final week of regular season action. GSU will next face UAB and Middle Tennessee State on the road. Georgia State will close the regular season with one final match in Atlanta next weekend against UNC Wilmington.
