Strong Outing by Bullpen in 5-1 Loss at No. 2 Florida

Four relievers combined for six scoreless innings

GAINESVILLE, FLA. -- Playing its 14th straight game against a ranked opponent, Georgia State fell 5-1 at No. 2 Florida Tuesday at Florida Ballpark.

Georgia State (4-10) outhit the Gators 6-5, including two hits each by Elian Merejo and Josh Smith. Smith, the sophomore left fielder, drove in the Panthers' run with an RBI-single in the sixth.

Florida (10-3) scored five runs in the first three innings, aided by four GSU walks, but the Panther bullpen shut them down the rest of the way. GSU relievers Trey Horton, Rafael Acosta, Dylan Matela and Joseph Brandon combined to pitch six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out seven.

The GSU staff held Florida leadoff hitter Jacob Young without a hit in four at-bats, including two strikeouts, snapping his school-record 30-game hitting streak.

Georgia State's challenging schedule continues as the Panthers play a three-game series at Kentucky this weekend, beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
