BATON ROUGE, Louis. --The No. 19 Georgia State Sandy Panthers dominated in a pair of wins Saturday to open play at the Tiger Beach Challenge. GSU defeated Houston Baptist 4-1, before downing No. 11 FAU by the same result.
Three pairs went undefeated on the day, Eden Hawes and Maddy Delmonte, Olivia Stasevich and Mattie Johnson, and Maddie Gordon and Becky Tresham.Â
The fun started when Gordon and Tresham registered a win in position No. 5 against Houston Baptist. The Huskies outlasted Bella Ferary and Kate Novack, in the duo's first outing of the young campaign. With the match knotted at one a piece, Meagan McCall and Kelly Dorn, who defeated two top-10 opposition last weekend, regained the Panthers' edge with a straight set result on the third court. Hawes and Delmonte clinched the team victory on the top flight. Shortly after, Stasevich and Johnson added to the Georgia State point total, taking the final court of the dual. With the win, the Panthers remain undefeated in the overall series against the Huskies.Â
In the second act of today's action, Ferary and Novack regrouped to find the first point against No. 11 FAU. Gordon and Tresham showed their grit and determination with an intense comeback win on court five. With the two point edge, the top-three flights entered competition feeding off the earlier pairs' contagious energy. Stasevich and Johnson would seal the team win on court two, before Hawes and Delmonte emerged victorious once again on the top flight. McCall and Dorn fought hard in a three-set battle on court three. Ultimately, FAU would outlast the pair to find their lone point of the contest, as the sunset on Louisiana.
"I am so proud of the way our team competed today," said assistant coach Tiffany Creamer. "This was a small glimpse into what we can and will accomplish this semester and the ride is going to be fun."
The Panthers are back in action Sunday to battle the nation's top-two teams, No. 2 FSU and host No. 1 LSU. Georgia State's first serve is set for 9:00 a.m. ET. Fans can watch both duals via live stream.
