#StateNotSouthern: Panthers Top Rival Eagles 71-66

Box Score ATLANTA-Georgia State overcame an 11-point first half deficit and topped in-state rival Georgia Southern 71-66 on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.

Georgia State (10-7, 6-4 Sun Belt) won for the third time in its last four games, as Ashley Foster led the Panthers with 11 points. Hannah Sadler, who knocked down two key free throws with five seconds to play, added 10 points, as 10 different Panthers scored.

Georgia Southern (9-10, 5-7 Sun Belt) shot just 33.8 percent and went 6-of-24 from 3-point range. Mya Burns led the Eagles with 15 points and eight rebounds.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Taylor Hosendove finished with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Kam Dziak and Tehya Lyons each scored nine for the Panthers.

Georgia Southern raced out to an early 9-3 lead. The Eagles pushed the lead to as many as nine, 22-13, with 31 seconds to play in the opening quarter following a 3-pointer by Daeja Holmes.

The Eagles increased the lead to 11, 26-15, as the Panthers went 8:04 without a field goal before starting a 9-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Ashley Foster, to cut the deficit to 28-24 with 4:08 to play in the second quarter.

The Panthers finished the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room after Lyons hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Her lay-up with 1:17 to play in the opening half tied the game for the Panthers for the first time since a minute into the game.

A lay-up by Taniyah Worth pushed Georgia State's lead to seven, 42-35, with 4:45 to play in the third quarter, before Southern responded with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to just one. However, a 3-pointer by Dziak with less than 30 seconds play in the third gave the Panthers a 45-41 lead going to the fourth quarter.

A fast break lay-up and free throw by Sadler with 7:31 to play gave the Panthers a 54-43 lead. Georgia Southern would cut Georgia State's lead to just three on a Barber 3-pointer with five seconds to play but could get no closer.

Game Highlights
• After going just 3-of-11 from the floor in the first quarter, the Panthers responded in the second going 8-of-14, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range.
• Georgia Southern outrebounded Georgia State 45-28, but turned the ball over 19 times which led to 20 GSU points.
 
Georgia State will remain at home and host Troy on Tuesday at 2 p.m., in the GSU Sports Arena, live on ESPN+.
