BOONE, N.C. - Four Panthers tallied 10 or more kills as the Georgia State volleyball team defeated Appalachian State, 3-2 (26-24, 15-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11) Friday night at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C.
The Panthers improve to 7-16, 4-9 Sun Belt on the year while App State falls to 7-17, 3-9 Sun Belt.
Georgia State displayed a balanced offensive attack as Evoni Lemons, Clara Bednarek, Leah Wilcox and Laura Ehieze combined for 47 kills to lead the Panthers to their fourth win in their last six matches.
Meisheia Griffin and Julianna Truscott also contributed significantly as they both added eight kills. Â
Defensively, the Panthers were led by Lemons, Claire Lewis and Olivia Kowalkowski as the freshman trio combined for 38 digs.Â
The Georgia State setters evenly distributed their passes in set one as five players tallied two or more kills. The Panthers opened the set with an 8-4 run before App State responded with a 10-6 run to tie the set at 14. The teams continued to go back-and-forth, and battled to a 24-24 ledger, before Georgia State tallied consecutive points to take the set, 26-24.Â
App State had a dominant performance in set two as the Mountaineers earned a 25-15 set victory. Georgia State kept the set competitive early but the Mountaineer offense was too much to handle for the Panthers. The Panthers were led by Bednarek and Wilcox as they each notched three kills in the set.
App State's momentum from set two carried over into set three as the Mountaineers jumped out to an 11-6 lead. Georgia State put together a series of runs but fell short, 22-25. In set three, the Panthers were led by Ehieze who registered four kills with a perfect hitting percentage.Â
Down 1-2, Georgia State needed someone to step up to keep the match alive and Lemons delivered. The talented freshman notched six kills while hitting .300 to lead the Panthers. Ehieze also played well as she tallied four kills while hitting .429. Kowalkowski and Ryan Spicer-Gordon held down the Panther back row in set four as they each logged five digs. The Panthers earned a 26-24 set victory and for the 10th time this season, Georgia State found itself heading into set five.Â
The Panthers came out firing on all cylinders in the deciding set and jumped out to a 10-5 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Mountaineers went on a 4-0 run to pull within one, but the Panthers refused to relinquish the lead. Georgia State then went on 5-2 run to win the set, 15-11.Â
The Panthers will look for their fifth conference victory of the season when they travel to Coastal Carolina (Nov. 7) for a noon matchup against the Chanticleers, live on ESPN+. Â
