Panthers Open Legends Classic with 77-59 Win Over William & Mary

Box Score HIGH POINT, N.C.-Senior Kane Williams just missed a double-double and led Georgia State with 23 points as the Panthers cruised to a 77-59 win over William & Mary on Saturday at the Qubein Center on the opening day of the Legends Classic.

Georgia State (3-1) saw three players finish in double figures while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor and knocking down eight 3-pointers. Junior Jalen Thomas pulled down 11 rebounds, sophomore Evan Johnson scored 17 points, and senior Justin Roberts added 11 points as the Panthers improved to 3-1 for a second-straight season.

Georgia State will now face host High Point on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the championship game which will air live on ESPN+.

William & Mary fell to 0-4 on the season despite 16 points from Connor Kochera and 14 points from Ben Wright. The Tribe were outrebounded 46-30 and turned the ball over 18 times in the loss.

Georgia State got off to a quick start as Roberts knocked down two 3-pointers in the first two minutes leading to the Tribe calling a timeout just 2:26 into the game as the Panthers led 10-2.

Williams' hot hand helped the Panthers push the lead to as many as 22 with 3:44 to play in the first half. He knocked down two free throws in the first minute of the game to become just the second player in program history with 400 makes in a career.

The senior finished the first 20 minutes with 16 points sending the Panthers into the locker room with a 46-26 lead.

The Panthers shot 55.2 percent from the floor and 5-of-11 from 3-point range before break, while holding the Tribe to just 30.3 percent shooting and 3-of-14 from beyond the arc.

Redshirt-junior Nelson Phillips got hot in the second half and knocked down 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions early to give the Panthers a 54-31 lead with 18:26 to play. Phillips, who earned the start for the injured Corey Allen, finished with eight points and four steals.

With a lay-up with 12:50 to play, Williams moved into seventh on Georgia State's all-time scoring list and gave the Panthers a 62-42 lead.

William & Mary held Georgia State scoreless four almost four minutes late in the second half but was only able to cut the Panthers' lead to 16 before Johnson knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner.
