Panthers Fall at Richmond 94-78

RICHMOND, Va.-Georgia State couldn't overcome better than 60 percent shooting from Richmond and fell to the Spiders 94-78 on Tuesday night at the Robins Center.

Richmond (2-1) finished the game going 33-of-54 (61.1 percent) from the floor while shooting 16-of-29 from 3-point range. Predicted to finish in second place in the A-10 Preseason Media Poll, the Spiders saw five players finish in double figures including Tyler Burton who scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Georgia State (2-1) couldn't overcome a slow start despite 17 points from senior Kane Williams and 16 points from fellow senior Justin Roberts.

Richmond raced out to an early 7-0 lead forcing Georgia State to call timeout before the first media timeout. Following back-to-back 3-pointers from Nick Sherod, the Spiders led 13-2 just six minutes into the game.

After Richmond pushed the lead to as many as 13, 28-15, with 6:52 to play in the opening half, the Panthers responded with a 7-0 run as Williams knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and moved into eighth place on Georgia State's all-time scoring list with 1,255 points.

However, Richmond immediately responded with a 7-0 run of its own and pushed the lead to as many as 15 points before going into the locker room with a 49-34 lead.

Richmond scored the first seven points of the second half and were able to push the lead to as many as 32 with 6:25 to play.

With the reserves in late, the Panthers did go on a 15-2 run as Kaleb Scott finished with seven points and four rebounds off the bench and Chien-Hao Ma scored his first career points adding five points for the Panthers.

Reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Corey Allen was limited to just seven points, while sophomore Evan Johnson came off the bench to score 13 points, knocking down three 3-pointers.

Nick Sherod added 16 points including four 3-pointers for Richmond, while Grant Golden added 15 points and five rebounds.

Georgia State finished the game shooting 44.6 percent from the floor and knocking down 10-of-23 from 3-point range, but could not come over the hot-shooting Spiders.

Game Notes
• Georgia State and Richmond were meeting for the first time on the court.
• The Panthers were looking for their first 3-0 start since beginning the 2000-01 season 7-0, a season that didn't come to an end until the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Georgia State was looking to win its first road game of the year for the first time since the 2017-18 season (at Rice).

Georgia State will travel to the Legends Classic at High Point for a pair of games this Saturday and Sunday. The Panthers will open the event facing former CAA foe William & Mary on Saturday at 5 p.m., followed by a contest against either host High Point or Howard on Sunday.
