Volleyball Continues Homestand with Contests Against UT Arlington and Texas State

ATLANTA - The Georgia State volleyball team (5-15, 2-8 Sun Belt) will stay home to host UT Arlington and Texas State this weekend at GSU Sports Arena.

Last weekend, the Panthers defeated Arkansas State before falling to Little Rock in five sets. Prior to the loss against Little Rock, Georgia State owned a two-match win streak. 
 

PANTHER QUICK HITS

  • Senior Meisheia Griffin tallied 19 kills while hitting over .500 against Arkansas State. Of note, entering last weekend, Arkansas State led the Sun Belt in total blocks, total digs and digs per set. 
  • Georgia State ranks second in the Sun Belt in total blocks with 193.5.
  • Prior to earning consecutive victories over Troy and Arkansas State, Georgia State owned an eight match losing streak dating back to the month of September.   
  • Evoni Lemons was tabbed GSU Student-Athlete of the Week last week after leading the Panthers to their first Sun Belt victory over Troy. 
  • Griffin currently leads the Sun Belt in total blocks with 106, while ranking sixth in hitting percentage (.304)
  • Ava Vlkovic ranks eighth in the Sun belt in digs with 302 on the year.


LAST TIME OUT (Arkansas State/Little Rock)
Georgia State went 1-1 last weekend, as the Panthers defeated Arkansas State Friday before falling to Little Rock on Saturday.  


(Arkansas State) 

  • In the contest against Arkansas State, Griffin had a dominant performance as the star middle blocker tallied 19 kills while hitting .515.
  • Defensively, the Panthers were led by Vlkovic who tallied 19 digs for the contest and Griffin who notched nine blocks. 
  • Entering Friday's contest, Arkansas State led the Sun Belt in total blocks, total digs and digs per set. 
  • Georgia State won the match, 3-1, for its second consecutive victory. 

(Little Rock)

  • Against Little Rock, Georgia State displayed a balanced offensive attack as five Panthers notched double-digit kills. 
  • The Panthers were led by Julianna Truscott who tallied a career-high 13 kills. The junior right side also added three blocks. Truscott, Griffin, Leah Wilcox, Clara Bednarek and Laura Ehieze all tallied double-digit kills for the Panthers.
  • Vlkovic had another stellar performance defensively as she tallied 20 digs. 
  • Georgia State won sets one and two before dropping the final three sets.
  • As a team, Georgia State logged more kills, digs, blocks and assists than Little Rock during the first two sets. 


THE MATCHUPS 

  • Georgia State will face UT Arlington for the 12th time in program history Friday. The Panthers own a 4-7 mark all-time against the Mavericks.
  • The Panthers will also face Texas State this weekend, marking the 13th time that the two teams have faced off. Georgia State owns a 2-10 record against the Bobcats.

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS

  • UT Arlington enters the weekend 6-13 and 4-6 in the Sun Belt. The Mavericks swept App State before being swept by Coastal Carolina last weekend.
  • Offensively, the Mavericks are led by Brooke Townsend who has 189 kills on the year. Defensively, UT Arlington is led by Alli Wells who ranks third in the Sun Belt with 379 digs. 

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS

  • Texas State owns a 12-11 record, including an 8-2 mark in Sun Belt play. The Bobcats have won six consecutive matches. Last weekend, the Bobcats defeated Coastal Carolina and App State.
  • Setter Emily DeWalt has been tabbed Sun Belt Setter of the Week for the past two weeks. DeWalt currently ranks second in the conference in assists per set with 10.71


NEXT UP
After hosting UT Arlington and Texas State this weekend, the Panthers will hit the road for rematches against App State (Nov. 5) and Coastal Carolina (Nov. 7) next weekend.
