Cold Shooting Costs Panthers in 74-61 Loss at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C.-After a hot-shooting start, Georgia State could not maintain the pace and fell to Appalachian State 74-61 on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Convocation Center.

After making eight of its first nine shots, Georgia State (8-4, 2-3 Sun Belt) went just 13-of-43 (30.2 percent) for the rest of the game, falling for a second-straight day to Appalachian State (12-5, 6-2 Sun Belt).

Senior Corey Allen led the Panthers with 19 points but went just 1-of-6 from 3-point range as the Panthers managed to shoot just 3-of-17 from beyond the arc. Allen entered the weekend one of the top five 3-point shooters in the country.

Junior Justin Roberts added 18 points and sophomore Jalen Thomas scored 10, while redshirt-junior Eliel Nsoseme grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

The first-place Mountaineers were led by James Lewis, Jr., who finished with a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds. Donovan Gregory added 14 points, while Justin Forrest and Michael Almonacy each scored 13 points.

Georgia State's quick start allowed the Panthers to take an early 16-7 lead just six minutes into the game.

After Appalachian State responded with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to three with 12:11 remaining in the half, Roberts knocked down a 3-pointer to keep the Panthers ahead 19-13.

The Mountaineers responded by scoring 19 of the next 22 points to build a double-digit lead, 32-22, with just under four minutes to play in the first half.
Forrest hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer from near mid-court to send the Mountaineers in to the locker room with a 37-26.

Georgia State opened the second half with a 14-5 run, while at one point holding Appalachian State scoreless for nearly six minutes, to cut the Mountaineers lead to 42-40 with 11:37 to play.

Leading by six, Appalachian State used a late 7-0 run to lead 59-46 with 4:35 to play and the Panthers would never cut the lead back to single digits.
