Diaz Notches Late Goal to Lift Panthers Past Eagles

Ana Diaz scored in the 85th minute as GSU defeated Georgia Southern 1-0.

ATLANTA -- Freshman Ana Diaz scored the game-winning goal Sunday night at Center Parc Stadium as Georgia State took down rival Georgia Southern 1-0.

Diaz scored in the 85th minute after an Alexus Knox free kick bounced around in the goal box before falling to Diaz' feet. It was the first career goal for the freshman from Johns Creek, Ga.

Sunday's game was originally scheduled to take place at the GSU Soccer Complex, but rain forced the contest to be moved to Center Parc Stadium. 

GSU recognized its eight seniors prior to the match and several of the seniors, including Knox, had impactful performances in the win.

"I think this win definitely boosts our momentum. After losing to Coastal [Carolina], this is what we needed right now." Knox said.

The Panthers controlled the game and recorded 14 shots while holding the Eagles to just three. GSU also had seven corner kicks to Georgia Southern's two.

With the win, Georgia State improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt. 

Next up for the Panthers is road contest at Troy on Oct. 2.
