Panthers Earn a Draw in Troy

Georgia State scored the equalizer midway through the second half to pull even on the road.

TROY, Ala. -- Freshman Gracen Crosby's first collegiate goal earned Georgia State the draw Friday at Troy as the Panthers and Trojans finished 1-1 after two overtime periods.

GSU was in control for most of the match and registered 11 shots on goal compared to Troy's four. It was the Trojans, however, that scored first. Troy came out aggressive in the second half and broke through in the 47th minute with a goal by Kate Eubank.

Georgia State regained control of the contest and kept the pressure up on the Trojan defense. Georgia State finally found the equalizer in the 71st minute. Troy's goalkeeper tried to clear the ball, but Emily Burke intercepted the clearance and got the ball to Crosby's feet. Crosby, noticing Troy's goalkeeper out of position, took a long, arching shot that found the upper right corner just out of reach of the retreating Trojan keeper to pull GSU even.

The Panthers had two more narrow misses in regulation but neither side was able to find the game-winner in overtime.

"We started sharply. I liked the way we came out. We've got to be better, more ruthless in front of goal," head coach Ed Joyce said. "I can't fault the girls' effort. They battled hard and gave good effort the entire match. We've got to do better with our shots on Sunday."

The Panthers (3-1-1, 2-1-1 Sun Belt) continue their road trip, traveling to Mobile to take on South Alabama. The Jaguars are 4-0 to start conference play and were picked first in the preseason polls.
