ATLANTA- After falling in a five-set thriller on the road, Georgia State returns to Atlanta for the first home contest of 2020. The Panthers will battle Mercer in the last non-conference match of the year.Â
SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
> In last weekend's season opener against Chattanooga, the Mocs jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Panthers battled to take the match to five sets before ultimately falling in a marathon fifth set.Â
> Meisheia Griffin dominated the net on both sides of play. The Georgia native recorded a career high 21 kills and 13 blocks during the match. Her 2.60 blocks per set currently leads the Sun Belt.Â
> Last weekend Ryan Spicer-Gordon completed her first game as libero. She accumulated a career high 22 digs in the effort.Â
> Jordan Shoemaker dished out a career high 56 assists and helped GSU compile a .262 hitting percentage. Shoemaker's 11.20 assists per set is second among SBC setters.Â
> During last week's match, four newcomers: Truth Hafey, Katie Strickland, Ally Thees, and Ava Vlkovic took the court for Georgia State for the first time.Â
SCOUTING MERCER
> Mercer finished the 2019 season with a 14-17 record, defeating two Sun Belt opponents (Georgia Southern and Little Rock).Â
> Mercer returns nine players from last year's squad, including junior outside hitter Annie Karle, who led the offense with 323 kills in 2019.Â
> The Bears defeated the Citadel 3-1 in their season opener. The two squads will meet again next weekend, which will conclude Mercer's three game 2020 schedule.Â
> Dennis Schroeder is in his fourth season as head coach.Â
THE MATCH
> Friday will mark the 41st all-time meeting between GSU and Mercer. Georgia State boasts a 34-6 record in the series. The two teams last met in 2016. The Bears took the match in straight sets.
> Mercer is a member of the Southern Conference. Friday's match will serve as the final non-conference meeting for Georgia State.Â
