She Takes the Cake ... And Bakes It, Too

What were you doing in December of 2012?

Currently many of us have a hard time remembering what day it is today, let alone what our plans were nearly eight years ago. Well, that December was when Georgia State athletic trainer Dinika Johnson was transitioning from working with the football team to the men's basketball team. During that transition, she started to get the itch to start her own business, "Eva Christine's Cupcakes."

Enter a pandemic, some free evening and weekends, and a dream hatched eight years ago has become a reality. After a minor name change, a business was born: "Eva Christine's Sweets."  The name comes from her grandmothers, who both had a wonderful amount of influence on the young Dinika, including her love of baking.

Her passion for this business really started to take shape when one of her grandmothers was suffering from dementia. Johnson would bake some cupcakes, take them to her, visit and "share sweets." The joy it brought to her grandmother as her health was deteriorating is the driving force behind the business, the enjoyment that her sweet treats can bring in good times and in bad.

"I just love the thought that something I make can take an already special event and bring even more happiness," Johnson said. "Sitting down and meeting the customer, personalizing each treat, making it customized and special for them."

Those same masterful skills are at play during her 9-5 (ha-ha) within the Georgia State Athletics Department. Let's face it, because of the nature of her work, few healthy student athletes are in Johnson's office. She spends most of her time assessing injuries, rehabbing, and devising a plan to get the student-athlete back to playing again.

Johnson uses some of these same skills when she bakes. Each customer and occasion is unique, just like her athletes, and each needs a custom plan in order for her to create the perfect cake.

Some of these masterpieces take upwards of six hours to create … and roughly three minutes to eat.

If there is one person who can handle a hectic schedule like this, it's Dinika Johnson. She is able to juggle many things at once, but the most important thing to remember is that whether it is an injured student athlete or a customer wanting a special cake for a loved one's 70th birthday, she is treating everyone to the best of her abilities and we all win because of that!
