THE GAME: Georgia State vs. Western Kentucky, AutoNation Cure Bowl, Dec. 16, 2017, Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Fla.
THE PLAY:Â Leading 13-10 in the third quarter, the Panthers used a flea flicker to take a 10-point lead. Quarterback Conner Manning took the snap and handed off to running back Glenn Smith coming across the middle. Smith flipped the ball to receiver
Devin Gentry on a reverse, and then Gentry tossed the ball back to Manning. The senior then found freshman tight end
Roger Carter all alone down the left sideline for a 42-yard touchdown and a 20-10 advantage with 5:55 left in the third quarter. That proved to the be the key play in Georgia State's first bowl victory, 27-17 over WKU, and school-record seven victories.
THE DRIVE: Holding a 13-10 lead, the Panthers took over at their 20 midway through the third quarter. Top receiver Penny Hart was limited to a handful of snaps in the game due to injury, but on 1st-and-10 from the GSU 31, he made a spectacular 27-yard catch at the WKU 42 to set up the trick play on the next snap.Â
AFTER THE GAME:
Conner Manning, on leading the team to victory and being MVP:
"For me, it's really a credit to all the guys around me. This game, we came in just trying to focus on playing a clean game. Besides my fumble, I thought we did that for the most part, but credit to guys around me. I mean a lot of guys stepped up and made tremendous plays, and I couldn't be prouder."
Head coach
Shawn Elliott:
"We're just a bunch of misfit players and misfit coaches who are blue collar, work hard and love one other and look at us," Elliott said. "First bowl win, most wins in school history - I'm damn proud to be a Georgia State Panther, I know that!"
