Panthers Fall on the Road at UT Arlington 70-62

ARLINGTON, Texas-UT Arlington overcame a 16-point first half deficit to top Georgia State 70-62 on Thursday night at the College Park Center.

Georgia State (18-10, 11-6 Sun Belt) saw its three-game winning streak snapped despite 21 points, seven rebounds, and five assists from junior Kane Williams.

UT Arlington (13-15, 9-8 Sun Belt) snapped a five-game losing streak to the Panthers as four Mavericks finished in double figures led by Brian Griffin who scored 13 points.

Georgia State, which had gone 81-of-93 from the free throw line in the last four games managed to go just 8-of-17 from the line while shooting just 35.3 percent from the floor and 6-of-24 from 3-point range.

Redshirt-junior Corey Allen was the only other Panther to reach double figures finishing with 12 points before fouling out. Senior Damon Wilson finished with six points and nine rebounds, while freshman Joe Jones III added six points and six rebounds.

After UT Arlington scored the first basket of the game, Georgia State responded with a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead with 16:40 to play. Following back-to-back 3-pointers by Williams and Justin Roberts, the Panthers went ahead 19-8 just under six minutes into the game.

Leading by nine, Georgia State used a 7-0 run to push the lead to 31-15, GSU's biggest of the game with 6:34 to play.

The Mavericks responded with a 15-2 run over the next six minutes to cut Georgia State's lead to three points before a Williams jumper sent the Panthers into the locker room with a 35-30 lead.

Georgia State used a 9-0 run to start the second half giving the Panthers a 44-30 lead. The Mavericks immediately responded with an 8-0 run and trailed just 44-38 with just under 15 minutes to play.

Minutes later the Mavericks made their first 3-pointer of the game to cut Georgia State's lead to 48-46 with 12:07 remaining. UTA finished the game just 4-of-20 from 3-point range.

On back-to-back baskets by Sam Griffin, UT Arlington took a 54-52 lead with 8:00 to play. It was the Mavericks first lead since leading 2-0.

Trailing by one, the Mavericks used a 6-0 run to take a 63-58 lead with just under four minutes to play.

On a Williams jumper, Georgia State trailed by just one point, 63-62, with 1:51 to play, but the Panthers would not score again.

Nicolas Elame came off the bench to just miss a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Mavericks, while David Azore added 11.

  • Georgia State head coach Rob Lanier coached UTA head coach Chris Ogden during Ogden's first two seasons at Texas. The pair also coached together at Texas and Tennessee.
  • With a 3-pointer tonight, Georgia State has made at least one 3-pointer in 776 games dating back to Feb. 18, 1995.
