Panthers Ride Fast Start to 52-34 Win Over ULM

ATLANTA – Cornelious Brown IV passed for 241 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, including two scoring passes to Cornelius McCoy, to lead Georgia State to a 52-34 victory over ULM Saturday at Center Parc Stadium.

Georgia State (3-3, 2-3 Sun Belt) tied the program record for points against an FBS opponent as the Panthers reached 52 points for the second time this season and fourth time over the last two years.

The Panthers rushed for 263 yards, including 102 by Destin Coates, who scored two touchdowns. The Sun Belt's leading rusher topped the 100-yard mark for the fourth time in five games this season, and he moved into fifth place on GSU's career rushing list with 1,219 yards.

The junior from Tallahassee, Fla., now has 13 career rushing touchdowns to move into a tie for second in GSU history.

GSU scored touchdowns on their first three possessions to jump to a 21-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game and went on to lead 42-14 at the half, a program record for points in a half.

"What a great win for our football team, the way we opened up the game and took control," head coach Shawn Elliott said. "So many times you can take wins for granted, but you've got to enjoy them and understand that it's tough to do. ULM made a valiant effort to try to get back in the game, but we responded and came out with a nice win.

"It was certainly the start that we anticipated and the start that we needed to have."

Back in the lineup after missing three games due to injury, McCoy immediately gave the Panthers a spark with a 57-yard reception on the first play from scrimmage. He finished with seven catches for 118 yards, his third career 100-yard game, and caught scoring passes of five and 18 yards for his first two-touchdown game.

"He does have a major impact on us offensively," Elliott said. "He brings energy to our team and confidence to our wide receiver group. To see him back out there and doing the things he is capable of doing was really special. McCoy is a great player, and he's fun to be around."

Georgia State collected six sacks and three other tackles for loss and forced three turnovers with an interception by Bryquice Brown and fumble recoveries by Dontae Wilson on a strip sack by Hardrick Willis and long-snapper Seth Glausier on a punt.

"In all three phases we came out and set the tone in the first half. The tackles for loss and the sacks were huge," Elliott said.

Brown, GSU's redshirt freshman signal caller, completed 20 of 32 passes for 241 yards and rushed for 30 yards, including a 3-yard scoring run.

Tight end Roger Carter was on the receiving end of Brown's first touchdown throw for his 10th career touchdown, tying Keith Rucker for most by a GSU tight end.

ULM (0-8, 0-5 Sun Belt) quarterback Jeremy Hunt came off the bench to pass for 339 yards and three touchdowns. Perry Carter scored three touchdowns for the Warhawks, two receiving and one rushing.

Georgia State plays its next two games on the road, beginning next Saturday at Appalachian State (2:30 p.m. on ESPN+).
