Winning and Wanting More

Leading up to opening night of the 2020-21 Georgia State men's basketball season, each member of the roster will be featured on a different day with a story, video, and social media elements. We conclude the series today with Nelson Phillips who enters his junior season in a Panther uniform.

Since his senior year of high school, all Nelson Phillips has known is winning. He led Warner Robins High School to the 2018 GSHA Class AAAAA State Championship.

Upon his arrival to Georgia State, he averaged 5.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, playing in all 33 games while helping the Panthers garner a third NCAA Tournament appearance over a stretch of five seasons.

Last year Phillips saw his production increase while even earning two late season starts. During his sophomore year he averaged 8.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, shooting better than 47 percent from the floor and adding 37 steals, third-most on the team.

Although he has a winning mentality and an edge about him on the court, off the court he lets his personality shine.

When asked during their Virtual Media Day calls in October and November, multiple players on the team claimed Phillips to be the funniest guy on the team. It may not come across on the court, but off the court is where he shines as well.

Phillips is the middle of five siblings to Nelson Phillips Sr. and Antoinette Jones. Upon his arrival to Georgia State, to outsiders, he kept a quiet demeanor, but quickly warmed up to his teammates and anyone you ask, he is one of the nicest guys around.

So, what is next for Phillips? Well only time will tell. One thing is for sure - Phillips will want to keep his teammates smiling off the court and a serious, high-flying mentality on the court. And there is no doubt that as long as he is around, the wins will continue to mount.
