Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Johnston's Goal Enough as Panthers Blank Mountaineers

Maddie Johnston scored the game's lone goal off a penalty in the 25th minute.

ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia State's women's soccer team continued its best start since 2015 Thursday as the Panthers shutout Appalachian State 1-0 at Center Parc Stadium.

Freshman Maddie Johnston was called on in the 25th minute to take a GSU penalty kick and beat the keeper to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. That would be enough as goalkeeper Jaddah Foos and the GSU defense kept App State off the scoreboard. Foos finished with five saves and earned her third clean sheet in four games.

"I don't think we played our best today but we did enough to get the win," head coach Ed Joyce said. "Our back line was strong and Jaddah was solid in goal. We will need to look to make better decisions in the attacking third moving forward."

With the win, the Panthers improve to 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Sun Belt. The win moves GSU into first place in the Sun Belt East Division with 13 points ahead of South Alabama who sits at 12 points.

Johnston is the ninth different Panther to score a goal this season and the fourth freshman.

GSU's five wins in its first seven games marks the best start since the Panthers went 5-0-2 to begin the 2015 season. The Panthers are off to their best start in conference play since GSU joined the Sun Belt. The last time GSU tallied 13 points through the first six conference contests was 2010 when GSU started its CAA campaign 5-1-1.

The Panthers travel to Conway S.C., to take on Coastal Carolina Sunday at noon.
