Win Streak Snapped with 75-65 Loss at Troy

Box Score TROY, Ala.-Georgia State saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as Troy topped the Panthers 75-65 at Trojan Arena.

Georgia State (13-7, 6-3 Sun Belt) saw four players finish in double figures but could not overcome shooting just 35.4 percent from the floor and 9-of-29 from 3-point range. Redshirt-sophomore Justin Roberts led the Panthers with 15 points and seven assists, while redshirt-junior Corey Allen added 14 points and four rebounds.

Troy (8-12, 4-5 Sun Belt) won for the seventh time in the last 10 games against the Panthers as K.J. Simon just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Ty Gordon led the Trojans with 20 points going 5-of-10 from 3-point range.

Troy took an early 10-5 lead three minutes into the game thanks to an 8-0 run.

Despite going more than five minutes without a field goal, Georgia State trailed just 27-23 with 4:11 to play before responding with 3-pointers from Allen and Roberts to take a 33-30 lead with 93 seconds left in the opening half.

The two teams went into the locker room tied at 33 as neither squad shot better than 38.0 percent. The Panthers forced the Trojans into 10 first half turnovers which led to nine GSU points.

Damon Wilson and Kane Williams knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second half and the Panthers quickly took a 39-33 lead two minutes into the half.

Wilson hit another 3-pointer with 11:45 to play to give Georgia State a 46-43 advantage.

Troy took just its second lead of the second half 57-56 with 5:45 to play and following an 8-0 run led the Panthers 67-58 with 2:07 to play to basically put the game away.

Wilson added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers before picking up two technical fouls and being ejected from the game.

Williams once again filled up the box score with 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds, while junior Josh Linder came off the bench to add seven points and four rebounds.

Darian Adams finished with six points, nine rebounds, and five assists for Troy, while Desmond Williams (13) and Tahj Small (10) each finished in double figures.

  • Georgia State still leads the all-time series with Troy 20-18.
  • Georgia State has compiled an 84-37 league record since rejoining the league in 2013-14.
  • Since the start of 2017, the Panthers have compiled a 24-5 mark in the month of January, including a stretch of 18-straight wins that ended last season.
