COLUMBIA, S.C. – Reigning Sun Belt Men's Tennis Player of the Week Giles Hussey earned his second consecutive win over a ranked opponent in singles play Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough for Georgia State to pull off the upset over No. 31 South Carolina as GSU fell to the Gamecocks 5-2 at the Carolina Tennis Center.
The loss pushed the Panthers to 4-4 overall while USC improved to 9-1 on the year, winning its seventh match in a row and remains unbeaten at home.
GSU battled well in doubles play, picking up a win at the No. 3 position from Hussey and Jack MacFarlane, as the Georgia State duo beat their opponents 6-2. After an 0-2 start at the No. 2 position for Hussey and MacFarlane, the two have found success with a 3-1 record at the No. 3 spot.
South Carolina would secure the doubles point with wins on courts one and two and carry that momentum into singles play. The Gamecocks stretched their lead to 3-0 with singles victories on courts one and three but couldn't complete the shutout as Hussey and Quentin Coulaud went on to notch wins for the blue and white. USC later formed wins on courts five and six to clinch the victory.
Hussey knocked off No. 95 Raphael Lambling in straight sets on court two, earning his second win in a row over a ranked opponent. He defeated No. 100 Simon Baudry of Clemson in three sets in GSU's home opener last weekend. The Swindon, England, native leads the team with four overall wins in singles play this year.
Coulaud also won his second straight match in singles play, as he edged past Joseph Brailovsky 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5. After an 0-2 start to the season at the No. 3 position, Coulaud has bounced back to improve to 2-2 overall and 2-0 at the No. 4 spot.
The Panthers return to action 1:30 p.m. Tuesday for a match against Florida Atlantic at the GSU Clarkston Courts.
