Shubladze Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

ATLANTA – Georgia State true freshman Vazha Shubladze has been named Sun Belt Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

Shubladze rounded out week three of the spring season with a perfect 2-0 record in singles play, earning his first career clinch and his first win against a ranked opponent over the weekend.

The freshman from Tbilsi, Georgia, opened the week with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over UNCW's Michael Copeland at the No. 4 position to clinch the 4-3 win for the Panthers. He followed up that performance with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over 69th-ranked Cole Gromley of Georgia Tech on Sunday, his first career victory over a ranked opponent in singles play.

Shubladze will enter the weekend on a two-match win streak, highlighted by a 2-1 record at the No. 3 position – tied for the second-highest win percentage at the position among all Sun Belt players this year. He owns a 3-2 overall record this season.

GSU men's tennis is back in action 1 p.m. Sunday as the Panthers host Clemson and Florida A&M for their 2019 spring home opener at the GSU Clarkston Courts.
