Mountaineers Outlast Panthers in Four Sets

Box Score ATLANTA- Georgia State dropped its match in four sets versus Appalachian State Saturday night. The Mountaineers defeated the Panthers by a final of 25-17, 18-25, 26-24 and 25-11 at the Sports Arena.

Despite falling behind in the opening frame, Sydney Stroud and Leah Wilcox led the offense to keep the match competitive. The outside and right-side hitters combined for nearly half of Georgia State's kills. Cierra Sillmon posted a career high seven blocks to bolster the State defense.

Both squads would open play with intensity, as both teams remain in the hunt for a seed in the Sun Belt Tournament. After completing several long rallies, the Panthers would find themselves stuck in rotation as the Mountaineers went on a 16-0 scoring run. Despite a late 6-0 run by GSU, Appalachian State would clinch the opening frame 25-17.

Kampbell Hehr would dish out assists to every front row player as the Panthers jumped to a quick 10-3 lead in the second. Georgia State's ball handling errors would allow the Mountaineers to close the gap, but a block from Sillmon and Wilcox would secure the 25-18 set victory.

The teams would alternate scoring runs, prohibiting either team to gain a sizeable lead in the third, but ultimately Appalachian State would outlast GSU 26-24. The Mountaineers would record a .650 hitting percentage en route to taking the fourth set 25-11 and the match 3-1.

GSU will conclude the regular season this upcoming week with a home and home set with Georgia Southern. The Panthers will travel to Statesboro for Tuesday night's meeting before the Eagles come to Atlanta for senior night and the season finale.
