Panthers Fall to Georgetown 91-83 in 2K Empire Classic

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C.-Despite a double-double from Josh Linder, Georgia State could not overcome 51 Georgetown free throw attempts and fell to the Hoyas 91-83 on Sunday night at Capital One Arena in the Panthers second game of the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.

Linder earned his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but Georgia State (1-3) was done in by 33 fouls which led to Georgetown (3-1) going 40-of-51 from the free throw line.

Redshirt-junior Corey Allen led the Panthers with 21 points, while senior Damon Wilson and redshirt-sophomore Justin Roberts each scored 15 points while pulling down four rebounds a piece.

The Panthers led the Hoyas at the half by six, but were outscored 58-44 after the break.

Georgetown big man Omer Yurtseven recorded his fourth double-double in as many games with 15 points and 13 boards, while Mac McClung led all scorers with 25 points going a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.

"Credit to Coach Ewing and his team," head coach Rob Lanier said. "We were coming off a game where we did a poor job of rebounding the basketball and gave up a bunch of offensive rebounds. We came into this game knowing that is a strength of this particular team and it was a focus of ours to try and keep them off the glass. We didn't do a good job of that. They were aggressive and got a lot of second chance opportunities which led to them going to the free throw line a bunch."

Georgetown opened the game taking a 19-11 lead before Georgia State responded with an 18-2 run to take control of the half.

Trailing by one, Wilson drove the ball to the hoop to give the Panthers a 20-19 lead with 8:41 to play, causing the Hoyas to call their first timeout. The run continued with an Allen 3-pointer and when Linder stole the ball at mid-court and drove it to the hoop, the Panthers led 27-21 with 6:35 remaining before the break.

The run ended on floater by Kavonte Ivery which gave the Panthers a 29-21 lead with just under seven minutes to play.

Georgia State went into the locker room leading 39-33 after shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, while holding Georgetown to just 30.3 percent shooting and just 2-of-12 from 3-point range. The Panthers outrebounded the Hoyas 21-17 before the break.

Trailing by six early in the second half, Georgetown used a 6-0 run to tie the game at 43 with 16:51 to play before Kane Williams responded with his second 3-pointer. Williams finished with 10 points for the Panthers.

The Hoyas continued to apply pressure and pushed their lead to 68-59 with 7:04 to play before a fast break by Allen cut into Georgetown's lead.
Over the final seven minutes of the game however the Panthers were never able to get closer than six en route to the win.

Notes:
  • Georgia State fell to 0-3 all-time against Georgetown with the previous match-ups coming in 1997 and 1998.
  • The Panthers outshot the Hoyas 48.3 percent to 40.0 percent and held Georgetown to just 3-of-18 from 3-point range.
  • The Hoyas finished the night outrebounding the Panthers 39-33.
Georgia State will continue a stretch of five-straight games away from home on Friday facing Prairie View A&M as a part of the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project in Riverside, Calif. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and can be seen live on FloHoops.
