Second Half Run Leads No. 2 Duke Over Georgia State, 74-63

Box Score DURHAM, N.C.-No. 2 Duke used a 20-4 early second half run to overcome Georgia State's late first half lead to earn a 74-63 win over the Panthers on Friday night in the first game of the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Corey Allen led Georgia State (1-2) with 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting, while junior Kane Williams added 16 points and seven assists.

The Panthers held Duke (4-0) to just 34.2 percent shooting and 7-of-28 from 3-point range but could not overcome Tre Jones who played all 40 minutes, scoring a career-high 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including four 3-pointers and 7-of-10 free throws. Vernon Carey finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils who earned their 150th consecutive non-conference home win dating back to 2000.

Georgia State led by three with just over a minute to play in the first half and trailed by just two at halftime.

After Duke took an early second half lead, the Panthers responded and on a jumper by Allen tied the game at 40 with 17:25 to play. Over the next seven and a half minutes Duke used a 20-4 run to push the lead to 60-44 with 9:53 to play.

"Duke is obviously pretty good, but I thought we would come out and compete," head coach Rob Lanier said. "The message to our team was that there was going to come a time in the game whether in the first half or the second half that we were going to face some adversity. Adversity came and I don't think we handled it as well as we could have hoped, and I thought that was really the story of the game."

The Panthers were looking to earn a fifth win over a ranked program in school history and garner the program's first win over an ACC program.

After Georgia State took an early 5-2 lead, Duke responded with a 7-0 run to take a 9-5 lead with 15:27 to play in the opening half.

On a lay-up by Williams that capped a 6-0 run, the Panthers cut Duke's lead to just 15-14 with 12:10 remaining. Using a 7-0 run later in the half capped by two free throws from Williams, the Panthers took a 26-25 lead with just over five minutes to play.

The Panthers kept the pressure on Duke and with back-to-back 3-pointers by Kavonte Ivery and Williams, Georgia State led 32-29 with 2:30 to play in the half.
Duke went into the locker room leading 36-34 following a Matthew Hurt lay-up just before the buzzer. The Panthers shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range before the half, but managed to go just 0-for-2 in the second half.

Sophomore Nelson Phillips and freshman Joe Jones III each scored seven points, while freshman Jalen Thomas added six. Senior Damon Wilson led the Panthers with seven rebounds.

Duke outrebounded the Panthers 58-32, including 30 rebounds on the offensive glass, the most ever for the Blue Devils under head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Cassius Stanley just missed a double-double for the Blue Devils with seven points and nine rebounds, while Jack White came off the bench to pull down 10 boards.

Notes:
  • Georgia State's last win over a ranked opponent came with a 57-56 win over No. 16 Baylor in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
  • Georgia State entered the game No. 8 in the country in rebound margin at +18.0 per game.
  • Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Panthers have won 135 games, the most of any NCAA Division 1 program in the state of Georgia.
Georgia State will continue a stretch of five-straight games away from home on Sunday at Georgetown as a part of the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. from Capital One Arena and can be seen live on the FS1.
