Panthers Cruise to 101-66 Exhibition Win Over Point

Damon Wilson Records Double-Double

ATLANTA-Led by a double-double from senior Damon Wilson, Georgia State cruised to a 101-66 exhibition win over Point on Friday night at the GSU Sports Arena.

Wilson finished 18 points, 10 rebounds and five steals in just under 26 minutes to lead five Panthers who finished in double figures.

Redshirt-junior Corey Allen added 20 points and five assists while knocking down four 3-pointers and redshirt-sophomore Justin Roberts added 13 points and five assists as the Panthers shot 48.9 percent from the floor.

Georgia State was playing its first game under new head coach Rob Lanier and showed its defensive prowess forcing the Skyhawks into 18 turnovers which led to 38 points.

"It's hard to believe that the season is already here," Lanier said. "What I said to the team after the game is that I think we have a chance to be good. I like our guys, I like our team. What I'm concerned about is I don't want us to allow anyone other than the guys in that locker room to determine the level of energy we play with. I is up to us to be responsible for that and not the opponent. Point did a good job and played hard, but I thought we lacked some discipline at times and we cannot allow that to happen."

Freshman Joe Jones III added 12 points and seven rebounds for Georgia State, while sophomore Nelson Phillips came off the bench to score 16 points and four boards.

Point was led by Sae'Quan Rogers who scored 16 points and dished out three assists, while Jordan Bates came off the bench and finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

After Point took an early 7-2 lead, Georgia State used a 13-0 run as Allen scored eight-straight points at one point to take a 15-7 lead with 15:30 to play.
The Panthers pushed the run to 23-4 over a six-minute stretch and led 25-11 with 11:50 to play in the first half. Following a lay-up by Kavonte Ivery and an immediate steal and lay-up by the sophomore, Georgia State led 31-11 with just over 11 minutes to play in the opening half. Ivery finished the game with nine points and a pair of assists.

With Georgia State leading 45-16, Point used a 12-0 to cut the Panther lead to 45-28 with just under four minutes to play before a Wilson 3-pointer ended the run.
Georgia State went into the locker room leading 56-33 while shooting 48.9 percent from the floor and 9-of-23 from 3-point range. Point was held to just 2-of-9 from 3-point range and turned the ball over 15 times which led to 28 Georgia State points.

Georgia State led by 20 or more for almost the entire second half and then used a 12-2 run late in the game to push the lead over 30, 91-58, with 5:18 to play.

Notes:
  • The Panthers improved to 2-0 against Point in exhibition games, with both coming in the last five years.
  • The Panthers are 16-0 in exhibition games since 2011, including a 15-0 mark at home.
  • Georgia State outscored Point 50-20 in the paint and outrebounded the Skyhawks 42-33.
  • The Panthers knocked down 11 3-pointers in the exhibition game. Last year the program set a school record with 330 3-pointers made.
Georgia State will open the season next Wednesday hosting Brewton-Parker in the GSU Sports Arena at 7 p.m. Season tickets are still available by calling 404-413-4020 during normal business hours or by visiting GeorgiaStateSports.com/Tix.
