STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia State women's soccer fell 2-0 to rival Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field, just the third time the Panthers have lost to Georgia Southern since 2002.
The loss dropped GSU to 4-8-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the Sun Belt while Georgia Southern improved to 5-7-1 on the year and 2-3-1 in conference play. Georgia Southern also gained one point in the annual Georgia State-Georgia Southern Rivalry Series, as Sunday gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead for the 2019-20 school year.
Georgia State found itself trailing less than one minute into Sunday's contest as the Eagles notched a goal from a few yards outside the center of the 18-yard box just 25 seconds after the opening whistle. Georgia Southern added to its lead in the 34th minute when Frida Brattum chipped a ball from midfield that sailed over the GSU keeper for Georgia Southern's second score of the day.
Despite the 2-0 halftime deficit, GSU controlled the possession for the majority of the first half and headed to the break tied with Georgia Southern in total shots with four apiece. Freshman forward Jimena Cabrero led the Panthers with three shots and two on goal after the first 45 minutes of play.
GSU stayed the aggressor in the second half, getting shots on goal from Maria Howell, Jolie Ryff and Brisa Zavala within the first 15 minutes but was able to find the back of the net and cut into the Georgia Southern lead.
The Panthers ended the afternoon with a 15-7 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Cabrero led GSU with five total shots and four on goal, both career highs.
Georgia State is back in action 7 p.m. Friday to host Louisiana for Fan Appreciation Day at the GSU Soccer Complex.
