ATLANTA – Brooke Shank and Jolie Ryff each tallied a goal and an assist to lead Georgia State women's soccer to a 2-0 victory over Louisiana Friday night at the GSU Soccer Complex, snapping the Panthers' two-match losing streak and picking up the team's second win in conference play.
Friday's win improved GSU to 5-8-2 on the season and 2-4-1 in the Sun Belt and gave the Panthers back-to-back victories against the Ragin' Cajuns. The win also moved Georgia State to 4-2-1 at the GSU Soccer Complex this season. Louisiana, meanwhile, dropped to 7-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play.
After struggling to find the back of the net in their last few matches, the Panthers got off to a strong start in Friday's contest by scoring twice within the first 20 minutes of play.
The first goal came from Shank in the 12th minute after getting on the end of a cross from Ryff from the right side of the field. Shank found a way through a crowd of players before firing a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
In the 20th minute, Ryff latched onto a through ball played by Shank, before taking a touch and finishing in the bottom right-hand corner of the goal for her second score of the season.
GSU nearly took a 3-0 lead later in the first half when Jimena Cabrero came close to scoring her fourth goal of the season but was denied by the crossbar. GSU went into halftime with a two-goal lead and 8-4 edge in totals shots and 4-2 advantage in shots on frame.
Louisiana continued to battle and had its best opportunity of the second half with less than five minutes left to play when Kaylie Powell had her header crash of the crossbar resulting in nothing more than a corner for her side.
The GSU back line held strong in the closing minutes and helped goalkeeper Kendra Clarke record her fourth shutout of the year.
The Panthers ended the night with a 14-11 lead in total shots and 5-2 edge in shots on target. Shank finished the game with seven total shots to tie her career high.
Georgia State returns to action 1 p.m. Sunday to host Texas State at the GSU Soccer Complex.
