ATLANTA -- In a series in which all three contests came down to the final at-bat, Georgia State tied the game with four runs in the eighth inning before Louisiana won 9-7 on a two-run homer in the ninth Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
After Georgia State (21-22, 7-13 Sun Belt) won Friday in 12 innings, the Ragin' Cajuns (26-20, 12-9) won Saturday in 11 innings and clinched the series Sunday.
Trailing 7-3, the Panthers tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. GSU loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Brandon Bell, Will Kilgore and Jack Thompson. With one out, Luke Leonard hit a ground ball to the third baseman, who stepped on the bag for one out but threw wildly to first base, allowing one run to score and putting runners at second and third.
Freshman Kalen Puckett delivered a pinch-hit double to the gap in right center, scoring Thompson and Leonard to pull the Panthers within 7-6. Another pinch hitter, Jake Corso, smacked a single to center field to tie plate Puckett with the tying run, but Corso was thrown out trying to take second base.
With two outs in the ninth, Daniel Lahare's two-run homer provided the winning runs for the Cajuns.
Georgia State took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on solo homers by Kilgore, his third of the season, and Ryan Glass, his fourth. After Louisiana scored an unearned run in the third, the Panthers got it back in the bottom of the inning as Kendall Ford legged out a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double play.
The Panthers had chances to add to their lead but hit into three double plays in the game, and Louisiana moved ahead with a five-run fifth, all unearned, as the Panthers commited two crucial errors.
The defensive struggles overshadowed a strong start by senior Jordan Lee, who allowed just one earned run on five hits over six innings.
Georgia State returns to action Wednesday, hosting Savannah State at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
