Rally Comes Up Short in 3-1 Loss at No. 16 Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. -- Georgia State had the winning run at the plate in the ninth inning but fell 3-1 at No. 16 Coastal Carolina Sunday at Springs Brooks Stadium.

GSU (19-20, 6-11 Sun Belt) won the Friday game, but the Chanticleers took the series, two games to one.

Trailing 3-0, the Panthers loaded the bases in the ninth inning on a single by Jake Corso and a pair of walks. Romero Greer drove in one run with a one-out groundout, to make it 3-1 with runners at second and third and two outs, but another groundout ended the game.

Senior right-hander Jordan Lee (3-2) turned in a solid start, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings, and relievers Tanner Thomson and Tyler Koch each threw a scoreless inning, but the offense couldn't produce enough support. The Panthers outhit Coastal, six to five, but struck out 10 times and left nine on base.

Lee allowed two runs in the first inning, all after two were out, and then one in the sixth.

Coastal Carolina starter Zach McCambrey (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts.

"Today we played good defense and we pitched outstanding. Jordan Lee, Tanner Thomson and Tyler Koch - all three of those guys pitched really well.

When you're in an environment like this against a Top 25 team, you need all three phases to win. We pitched today, we played defense today, but just could not get the timely hit. We had a lot of opportunities, but just couldn't get the big hit. I'm really proud that the team never quit, and it came down to the very last at-bat."

The Panthers return home to host Savannah State Tuesday at 6 p.m.
