ATLANTA-Georgia State volleyball dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Troy (19-25, 25- 22, 19-25, 25-21, 15-17) Friday night. The Panthers are now 8-12 on the season.
The teams were knotted up at 14 halfway through the first set, but a 6-0 run by the Trojans would give them the lead and eventually the set. The Panthers would rally for a 25-22 win in the second set, fueled by a 12 team kills and a .308 hitting percentage.
The third set saw GSU get out to an early lead, but Troy would go on a 5-0 run late to secure the win 25-19. The Trojans would get out to an 11-8 lead in the fourth set before a 6-1 Panther run would put GSU ahead. Georgia State would cruise to force a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth set Georgia State would get an early lead only to have Troy battle back and tie the score at six. However, a 4-0 Panther run would give GSU a 10-6 advantage. The Trojans would answer with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the score at 11. Troy would pull away to win the match three sets to two.
Bright spots in the match included Crystal Lee and Sydney Stroud both eclipsing the 200 kill mark on the season. Stroud led all players with 18 kills on the night, and finished with a .389 hitting percentage. Setter Carley Eiken tallied 35 assists and 10 digs for a double double.
The Panthers will look bounce back tomorrow evening, as GSU plays host to South Alabama. Live stats and video for the match will be available via georgiastatesports.com.
