Gilbert and Wells Sweep Sun Belt Weekly Honors

The Sun Belt Conference has voted a pair of Georgia State track and field standouts as the Sun Belt Student-Athletes of the Week. Ravin Gilbert was chosen as the Track Student-Athlete and LaPorscha Wells was awarded the Field Student-Athlete honor.

Gilbert, GSU's Energizer Bunny, was at it again in multiple events at the prestigious Florida Relays. She ran the Sun Belt-fastest season times of the year in the 200m and 4x100m and the second-fastest time in the 100m. She now has the 12th fastest NCAA East 100m time, the 24th fastest NCAA East 200m time and the 38th NCAA East fastest 4x100m time. Gilbert ran the 100 in 11.461, missing the school record by .001. She raced the 200 in 23.65 and with the relay team in 45.69.

Wells unleashed a school record and Sun Belt season-best hammer throw of 60.36m (198-00) to defeat the 26 competitors and win her event at the prestigious Florida Relays. With that throw, Wells moved up to 9th on the NCAA East qualifying list for the outdoor season. That gives her two top 15 NCAA East performances as her shot put of 15.78m (51-9 ¼) is already on the list at No. 15. Her shot put at the Florida Relays of 15.41m was shy of her best, but placed her 12th in Saturday's competition. Her hammer throw of 60.36 is four meters (14 feet) longer than this season's second best in the Sun Belt.

Both will join their teammates this weekend at the 18-team Auburn Invitational Meet. The team continues to seek improvement heading toward the Sun Belt Championship Meet May 13-15 in Lafayette, La.
