ATLANTA – Freshman Remington Hasty's first career RBI was a big one as it came in the manner of a walkoff walk with the bases loaded to help GSU beat St. John's 8-7 Wednesday night at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.
The Panthers (5-6) overcame five errors to defeat the Red Storm (3-4). Georgia State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and looked to be in control until the defense fell apart in the top of the fifth, leading to a five-run St. John's frame. Just two of the Red Storm's seven runs on the day were earned.
Sophomore Ivie Drake led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run (4) that finally came down on the roof of the Panthers' indoor hitting facility in left field. GSU used some clutch two-out hitting to add three more runs in the inning. GSU made it 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a Kensey Caldwell infield single with the bases loaded, but St. John's came roaring back to make take a 7-6 lead in the top of the fifth. Georgia State committed four errors in the inning.
With her team down one with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Arden Jobe drew a walk to keep the Panthers alive. Taylor Bradley then singled to right field as Mallory Koepke entered the game to pinch run for Jobe. Morgan Brown, who had the game-tying RBI in the seventh inning seven days ago against Georgia Tech, came through again with a two-out RBI-single up the middle to make it 8-8. St. John's then intentionally walked Drake to load the bases, bringing up freshman Remington Hasty. Hasty watched three straight balls before the 3-0 pitch was called for a strike. With a 3-1 count, the next pitch was low, sending Hasty to first and scoring Bradley to win it for Georgia State.
Freshman Amanda Chance pitched two innings and held the Red Storm scoreless on one hit to earn her first career win.
