Volleyball Falls in Five to Undefeated Owls

What you need to know:

* Georgia State (3-4) fell in its fourth five-set match Tuesday night to Kennesaw State (6-0) 25-23, 14-25, 16-25, 26-24, 15-4.

* Deidra Bohannon and Kristina Stinson led the offense with 15 kills and 14 kills, respectively. Gabby Serafin had a strong defensive game, coming up with 23 digs.

* GSU host the Georgia State Invitational this weekend. The Panthers will host Radford, DePaul and Grambling on Friday and Saturday.


ATLANTA – Georgia State's volleyball team entered Tuesday on a three-match win streak, but fell to 3-4 on the season with a five-set loss to Kennesaw State (6-0) at the GSU Sports Arena. The Owls won 25-23, 14-25, 16-25, 26-24, 15-4.

“Once again, it's controlling our side of the net,” head coach Sally Polhamus said. “We played really well at points tonight, but moving forward we want to play at a high level for the whole match.”

Georgia State's Deidra Bohannon led the team in kills with 15 and also came up with 14 digs and two blocks. Kristina Stinson was right behind her with 14 kills, seven digs and four aces. On defense, it was Gabby Serafin who led the squad in digs with 23. Natalia Nieto recorded 40 assists and three aces of her own. Freshman Shae Chapman's four blocks was highest on the team.

Kennesaw State pulled ahead in the first set and held off a GSU rally late to win 25-23. The Panthers responded by hitting .310 in Set 2 to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-14 win. GSU played even better in the third set, outhitting KSU .412-.048. The Panthers went into intermission up 2-1 after winning the third set 25-16.

The Owls regained the momentum in Set 4 and forced a fifth set after once again fighting off a late surge by the Panthers. It was the fourth five-set match that Georgia State has played in its first seven matches of 2015. KSU carried that momentum into Set 5 and won 15-4 to win the contest.

Georgia State is back in action Friday when it host the GSU Invitational. GSU will host Radford, DePaul and Grambling, playing at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday before wrapping up the tournament with a 1:30 p.m. match on Saturday.
